My Dear Skagtroph,

Yes; in answer to your previous inquiry, your patient's current state of political and moral confusion is ample time to press home your advantage in commandeering his mind and, ultimately, obtaining his soul. Muddling his mind on issues the humans think are of great importance and keeping his thoughts away from eternal issues that really are important ought to be the most basic and first hand of knowledge of your fuddling training at The Tempters College. Indeed, it must have been one of the very first things you learned while enrolled there and I am absolutely shocked to find you are writing to me in need of assistance on what seems to me one of the most trivial and favorable situations we have seen in your patient thus far.

No matter. I see a weak point in your patient, and the revelation of such a point could give you great advantage in your later years of fuddling his mind. So for the betterment of the both of us (and, of course, for the praise of our Father below) I intend to give it to you. I would say that you should thank me after I reveal this secret to you, but the sincere feelings of gratitude and thankfulness are contrivances of the Enemy and I do not wish to be charged with the crime heresy for uttering them here in the Kingdom of Noise.

It is important to understand that a patient who is not in great communication with the Enemy tends to rely more upon logic than his faith in a make believe 'god' or any sort of misleading 'good' or 'comfortable' feeling that you may attempt to contrive in his head. Unless you have a very peculiar patient, (which, in your case, I see you do not) a human, when confused or lost in the Enemy's sense of moralities and justices, tends to (if he is a clever human) fall back upon logic more than anything else. Surely you have noted that a human patient will more often than not resort to these sorts of thought processes whenever his faith is undulating or whenever the creature has recently undergone a great tragedy. He will enter into a sort of 'going back to basics' type of phenomenon in where he reassures himself of the most rudimentary and obvious of facts. You will hear him muttering to himself, in the instances of his most dire longings for sense and justice, 'OK. The sky is blue' or 'Water is wet.' or 'normal dogs have four legs. At least I know that much.' This is the time where you strike! It is better that you rely upon this rudimentary logic and strict scientific processes to fill your patient's mind while he is in such a desperate state. Press it into his mind! Let them become his 'god' and allow them to replace the comforts of his faith the Enemy once gave him! When a human relies entirely upon logic and the biological and animalistic given intelligence to get him through his life and completely disregards the 'Zoe' and spiritual life that the Enemy also gave him, the result is pure acid to his soul. It not only begins to disintegrate the creature from the inside out, but also creates one of the most impenetrable shields against attacks from the Enemy that I know of. He will then begin to consider all the feelings he once felt in regards to the Enemy to be pure sentimentality. He will deaden himself (if you allow this way of thinking to proceed within him) before he wakes up and realizes what is going on.

But the great joke of all this is that he hardly ever does realize it. He will think to himself, whenever the Enemy tries to bring him round, 'What could possibly go wrong with relying upon logic? It would be absolute ludicrous if I did not!' You will find this to be much easier than trying to contrive a good feeling or a mysterious sense of awe that just sits in the back of his head. The feelings of his own satisfaction and the pride of his being able to 'figure things out on his own' (never mind where his initial intellect originated) will seep in and replace it. I think you will also find this strategy to be more permanent in the long run.

But using this method as a means for itself would be such a waste if it weren't exploited to its fullest extent. There is and even greater way to exploit the pure lie that is absolute reliance upon things both expressible and tangible.

However, you seemed to have caught me at a bad time, and I am about to attend the biweekly meeting of the undersecretary's guild. I shall post you with further details on how to extend this wonderful drought in your patients life sometime next week.

Your affectionate uncle,

Gagweeze
This is something I wrote last night and a little this morning. It is a communication between the newly appointed junior devil, Skagtroph, and Gagweeze, Skagtroph's uncle and a respected member of the undersecretary's guild in Hell. If any of you have ever read 'The Screwtape Letters', you will understand the style. Part 2 to come shortly.
